How Much Does It Cost to Book Your Favorite Rapper?

How Much Does It Cost to Book Your Favorite Rapper?

If you haven’t noticed, the rap business has changed. You probably know this because you and all your friends likely haven’t paid for an artist’s music in a minute. Due to torrenting, streaming, and music sharing (basically the Internet), records just don’t sell like they used to. So, with record purchases more or less going the way of Blockbuster rentals, those who make their living through music have had to find another way to make money. The answer? Touring.

Currently, everyone from struggle rappers to superstars are touring more often, hitting more cities, and generally, getting more money. As touring becomes more crucial, the amount that artists get paid for a show, a.k.a. their quote, becomes more interesting and more important. Rap fans geeked out over sales numbers to see how their favorite and least favorite rappers’ careers are fairing. Now, you’re much better off checking how much they get for a show. Remember when 50 Cent and Kanye West had their sales competition? That was 2008, but in 2014, they should be seeing whose quote is higher (Answer: ‘Ye by a million).

Another major development is how massively important booking agencies, a.k.a. the companies whose agents book artists’ tours, have become. As record deals mean less and less, who your booking agent is can count for everything. A few major companies—William Morris Endeavor, CAA, the Agency Group, and ICM—represent nearly all your favorite rappers, and a few agents, major players like Cara Lewis or Peter Schwartz, have taken on the behind-the-scenes roles of tastemakers. For up-and-comers, getting signed to a powerful booking agency can be a bigger cosign than signing your first deal. Chance the Rapper has yet to link up with a label, but in 2013 inking a contract with Cara Lewis and CAA was more than enough to verify his hype.

Because of how important touring has become, we compiled a list letting you know how much your favorite rapper gets paid for a show. All these numbers are ballpark estimates gathered by scouring the Internet for details on tours posted by industry sites or speaking with agencies and third party dealers and asking for their artists’ quotes. However, there are interesting quirks that can twist some of these figures. For example, you get paid exponentially more for a “one-off” (a random show at a festival, college, or private party) than you would for stops on an extended tour.

For anyone interested in which rappers are really getting the most money and who is dominating in the most important area in the music industry today, this list has all you need. Study up.

Isaiah Rashad

Quote: $7,500

Although this is the lowest number for any T.D.E. artist, this is nothing to be ashamed of with Rashad coming off of just one mixtape. We’re sure this number is gonna go up as he releases more material.

Vic Mensa

Quote: $10,000

$10K might not be much compared to others on this list, but Vic has been putting out strong material, so this figure is sure to climb once his album drops.

Trinidad Jame$

Quote: $12,500

While Trinidad’s stock was by no means rising before getting dropped by Def Jam, that bad PR certainly isn’t going to help.

Travi$ Scott

Quote: $15,000

Anyone who’s ever been to one of his live shows has to feel like this is a bargain for how hard dude goes at every performance.

Action Bronson

Quote: $20,000

Bronsoliño has continued to grown his profile in 2014, and his raucous live shows have played a major factor. Bronson is known for walking in the crowd and giving away free stuff, so $20K seems like a bargain.

Curren$y

Quote: $20,000

Few rappers have put as much time into crafting a cult fan base as Curren$y, and it obviously paid off as he can get this much for a show without much mainstream notoriety.

Danny Brown

Quote: $20,000

Okay, Danny Brown might not get the most per show of all the rappers on this list, but who else got felatio on stage?

Asher Roth

Quote: $20,000

Asher never ended up appealing to the larger audience he seemed destined to win over with his 2009 hit “I Love College.” But he did grow a valuable cult fan base that will come out and see him whenever he tours smaller venues.

Rakim

Quote: $20,000

Rakim is, and always will be, one of the greatest and most revered MCs of all time. However, the majority of people of a concert-going age aren’t necessarily dying to see the next Rakim tour.

Ab-Soul

Quote: $20,000

While Soul’s star is still hopefully on the rise, we’re curious as to whether the mixed response to These Days… will end up changing this figure.

A$AP Ferg

Quote: $25,000

What a difference a year has made for Mr. Fergestein. Singles like “Work” and “Shabba” and the success of Trap Lord have taken Ferg from a background Mob member to a stud in his own right, and his pay rate has reflected that come up.

Bow Wow

Quote: $25,000

You mad? Despite how corny you may think Bow Wow is, he still rakes in a solid amount per show even though he hasn’t released anything substantial in years. That being said, it’d take more than $25,000 for us to call him Shad Moss.

Earl Sweatshirt

Quote: $25,000

Earl keeps it more low-key than Tyler, The Creator does, but we are a little surprised by the difference between the two Odd Future stars’ quotes. Doris was successful, but apparently not successful enough to launch him onto the same level as his fellow Golf Wanger.

Chance the Rapper

Quote: $35,000

Sure, $35K a show might not blow your mind right from the jump, but when you consider the fact that young Chancellor has played an insane amount of shows this year and that he is free from a pesky 360 deal taking some of his precious show money, it’s easy to see he truly raked it in in 2014.

RiFF RAFF

Quote: $35,000

From Gs to Gents to $35K a show is a damn impressive come-up. Rap Game Horatio Alger.

De La Soul

Quote: $40,000

De La Soul’s shows bring out an older of crowd of hip-hop fans, and they get paid well for entertaining the elders.

Busta Rhymes

Quote: $40,000

Busta has a huge catalog of hits and is known for a voracious live show, so this feels a little on the low side.

Game

Quote: $40,000-$50,000

Now that Game doesn’t have a record deal—which means he doesn’t have a 360 deal eating away at his show money—he should be collecting as many of these show checks as possible.

Big Boi

Quote: $50,000

Big Boi’s two excellent solo albums have more than proved that he’s a star by himself. Still, his lofty quote doesn’t hold a candle to what OutKast is getting as a duo hitting this summer’s festival circuit.

Soulja Boy

Quote: $50,000+

Who’da thunk that the kid who made “Crank Dat” would not only be relevant seven years later but also be making this much per show? We made it.

Image via HotNewHipHop

Tyler, The Creator

Quote: $60,000

Tyler, The Creator is yet another artist whose unique live show played such a big role in creating a persona early in his career. He’s known for his energetic performances, and he’s well compensated for them.

Image via Hustle Grl

Juicy J

Quote: $60,000

Well, now you know how many bandz it takes to make Juicy J dance.

Image via BET

Nelly

Quote: $65,000

We love Nellyville and Country Grammar as much as the next person, but this number makes us feel like some people are overpaying for nostalgia.

Lupe Fiasco

Quote: $65,000-$70,000

Has Lupe cooled off considerably since his incredible first two albums? Yes. But, does he still make more than 99.9 percent of people on this planet for one night of work? Yes, yes, he does.

Image via Skull Candy

Wale

Quote: $70,000

This is a pretty good quote for a guy who many thought was down for the count after his first album flopped.

B.o.B

Quote: $70,000

This might seem a bit high to most hip-hop fans, but this is what pop crossover hits will do for you.

Image via Streotude

Jeezy

Quote: $70,000

Although he’s currently opening for Wiz and it’s been a minute since he toured alone, Jeezy’s catalog and star power are so strong that big money is still out there for him.

Image via 2DopeBoyz

Big Sean

Quote: $75,000

Despite Hall of Fame disappointing both critically and commercially, Sean can still charge as much as he did when he was riding high off of Finally Famous. That’s what big time features will do for you.

Common

Quote: $75,000

Common has shown no signs of slowing with age as his last two albums have both been impressive. As long as he continues to want to perform, he will continue to get great money.

Image via Rap Genius

Mac Miller

Quote: $75,000

Mac’s shows have long been known to bring an odd mix of fans who love his earlier, more pop-inclined music and those who like his more recent indie cuts. But no matter how those groups mesh, it equals cash for him.

Ludacris

Quote: $80,000+

Between these healthy nostalgia-fueled checks and his acting money, Luda seems to be sitting pretty.

2 Chainz

Quote: $85,000

If you had told Tity Boi in 2011 that he would be making this much per performance in 2014, he would have smacked you square in the face.

Childish Gambino

Quote: $85,000

Gambino’s now-side gig as an actor gave him more exposure than your average rapper and therefore upped his price. Add to that the success of Because the Internet and how much songs like “3005” have crossed over and this number is likely to go up.

A$AP Rocky

Quote: $90,000-$120,000

Even though it’s been somewhat of a slow year for Rocky in terms of his musical output, he still gets paid as well as he did coming off of Long.Live.A$AP. It’s now impossible to deny the fact that he’s got real star power.

Rick Ross

Quote: $100,000

If rich is gagnsta and if Rick Ross can get $100,000 for a show, then Ross must be gangsta, right?

Lauryn HIll

Quote: $100,000

Ah, the enigmatic Ms. Hill. Despite all the crazy shit that’s happened since the seminal Miseducation, Lauryn still gets paid.

Snoop Dogg

Quote: $100,000

Simply put, Snoop is a legend and will likely be forever paid like one.

The Roots

Quote: $100,000+

This number might seem high, but it takes a pretty penny to pull the Roots away from their incredible gig as The Tonight Show house band.

Kid Cudi

Quote: $110,000+

Cudi has got to be getting good money if he’s performing in a custom spacesuit.

Wiz Khalifa

Quote: $115,000

Wiz has steadily ascended into rap stardom in the last five or so years, and right now is a pivotal time when it comes to his future. Blacc Hollywood is out this week, and he’s in the middle of a massive nationwide tour, both of which obviously have a huge impact on how much he can charge in the future.

J. Cole

Quote: $125,000

While Cole’s “Dollar and a Dream” tour dates won’t net him this type of scratch, he more than makes up for it with dates at festivals and colleges.

Kendrick Lamar

Quote: $125,000+

Yeah, this is a lot of money, but it feels low for one of the premier names in hip-hop, and it will only go up as Kendrick’s star continues to rise.

50 Cent

Quote: $150,000+

For someone whose peak was as high as 50 Cent’s, something in the neighborhood of $150,000 seems a little low. However, with the renewed relevancy thanks to the mini-G-Unit resurgence, we’re sure this number will creep back up.

Nicki Minaj

Quote: $250,000+

Nicki is a superstar, and she’s only going to get bigger. While she already commands a hefty fee no one will be surprised as her price continues to rise.

Lil Wayne

Quote: $300,000+

Lil Wayne has been getting this much money basically since Tha Carter III launched him into international stardom. While haters incorrectly declared that Wayne fell off, with “Believe Me” and “Grindin’” already making Tha Carter V look spectacular, Weezy F. will continue to get his money.

Drake

Quote: $350,000-$600,000

While Drake hasn’t played any major festivals recently (where rappers can make the most money) besides his own OVO since going from the boy to the man, Drizzy still commands a hefty price for his services and stands to make insane bank off of the “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour.

Macklemore

Quote: $350,000-$700,000

Macklemore sees your saltiness about appropriation and Grammy’s and raises you a shit ton of money. Macklemore gets paid as much as the rest of rap’s superstars, which means, like it or not, he is one of rap’s biggest superstars.

Kanye West

Quote: $500,000+

Kanye’s live shows catch a lot of flack from basics who don’t like his rants. Well, the “Yeezus Tour,” rants and all, was still the second-best-selling tour of 2013 and trailed only Paul McCartney. What’s a black beatle anyways?

Image via MTV

Jay Z

Quote: $1,000,000+

With some reports saying that Jay and Bey have personally been raking in as much as $4 million a night combined during their “On the Run” tour, this number is basically just a stand in for “a ton of fucking money.”

Rapper Beanie Sigel moved from prison to halfway house

Rapper Beanie Sigel has moved from a federal prison to a halfway house.

The Bureau of Prisons says Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was moved from the Federal Correctional Institution Schuylkill to a Philadelphia-area residential reentry center on Aug. 14.

The Philadelphia native is expected to remain there until Dec. 6, according to the bureau.

Sigel, 40, had been serving a two-year sentence for tax evasion. He admitted failing to pay taxes for three years on more than $1 million of income, cheating the IRS out of nearly $350,000 in taxes from 2003 to 2005.

Authorities also said he failed to pay taxes or file returns from 1999 through 2002. In total, according to prosecutors, he owed the IRS more than $700,000.

Two weeks before he was scheduled to report to prison — and hours after the release of his sixth album, This Time — Sigel was arrested for drug and gun charges during a traffic on Interstate 95 in Delaware County. He later pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance.

Sigel’s attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr., said the halfway house “gives the prisoners an opportunity to kind of work their way back, and reintegrate into the community.”

Former inmates at the reentry centers are allowed to leave for pre-approved activities like finding work, obtaining identification and reconnecting with family, bureau spokesman Chris Burke said. Each inmate has specific restrictions they must follow and programs they participate in.

The bureau wouldn’t specify which halfway house Sigel has been moved to, but said it is one run by the Philadelphia Residential Reentry Management field office. He could later move from the reentry center to home confinement.

In an interview with Inquirer music critic Dan DeLuca shortly before he reported to prison in 2012, Sigel said “missing all the money I’ll miss on tour” was the only thing he dreaded about his time behind bars.

“But I’ll get it again,” the rapper said. “I’ve been rich four times, and broke forever.”

Sigel hopes to return to the music industry, Perri said.

“I think that’s ultimately his goal,” he said.

Reports of Sigel’s release surfaced last week when @DJ Drama and and @Wayno119 posted photos of the rapper on social media. DJ Drama wrote on Instagram: “welcome home beans!” and the posts were widely distributed.

“It does appear to me that he’s still in demand,” Perri said.

The recent cases are not the first time Sigel has run into trouble with the law. He previously served time in prison for possessing an illegal gun, and violated his probation in that case. He was found not guilty of attempted murder charges related to a 2003 shooting in West Philadelphia.

In the 2012 Inquirer interview, Sigel called his previous time in prison calming and said he was a “different person” there.

“I wasn’t Beanie Sigel,” he said. “So that was a good thing. I don’t like being Beanie Sigel. Beanie Sigel is a headache.”

  • The rapper shared two photos from the crime scene, one of them showing Brown’s corpse in the street
  • Thee Pharoah wrote that Brown was running when he was shot twice in the back and five more times as a ‘barrage’ after he turned around

  • WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT

A hip hop artist from Ferguson, Missouri, was home at noon last Saturday when he looked out the window and saw a police officer shoot a young man to death.

The rapper who goes by the stage name Thee Pharoah took to social media and proceeded to live-tweet the shooting of 19-year-old Michael Brown and its tragic aftermath.

Brown was unarmed when he was shot eight times in the middle of a street in Ferguson at the hands of officer Darren Wilson.

According to a timeline of the shooting, the first bullets struck the 18-year-old just after 12pm Saturday.

About an hour later, rapper Thee Pharoah sent out his first tweet about the tragedy playing out outside his window: ‘I JUST SAW SOMEONE DIE OMFG,’ he wrote in all caps.

In response to a question about the incident posed to him by a friend, Pharoah clarified that ‘the police just shot someone dead’ in front of his home.

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter then shared a disturbing photo taken from his backyard showing Brown’s body lying in the middle of the street with a uniformed police officer standing over him.

There is no indication that the officer seen in the frame was the shooter.

The rapper confided in his followers that he was very upset by what happened, describing a harrowing scene with ‘blood all over the street’ and crime scene tape surrounding his apartment building.

When asked by a user why the officer shot the man, later identified as Michael Brown, Thee Pharoah replied that there was ‘no reason,’ and that the youth described by him as an 18- or 19-year-old was just ‘running.’

‘Dude was running and the cops just shot.him. i saw him die,’ the singer wrote.

During a press conference Friday, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said that Officer Wilson stopped Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson at 12.01pm because they were walking down the middle of the road and blocking traffic.

About two hours after the deadly confrontation, Thee Pharoah tweeted in response to a query from a follower that he heard seven shots and saw Brown getting hit by two of the rounds from behind.

He added that the remaining five bullets came as a ‘barrage’ after Michael Brown turned around to face the officer.

Thee Pharoah then uploaded another picture of the crime scene, now with a red screen concealing Brown’s body from view, and an officer walking with a rifle in his hand. It is believed that the pictured Ferguson cop was not involved in the incident.

At around 3.30pm, some three hours after the shooting, Pharoah tweeted that Brown was still lying dead on the ground.

On Sunday, Thee Pharoah declared that he will no longer be tweeting about the shooting. Since then, his friends have advised him to hire a lawyer and ‘lay low.’

Over the past week, Thee Pharoah has been regularly writing about protests raging in Ferguson and around the country, and re-tweeting news items about the case.

On Thursday, he appealed on Twitter to reporters to stop asking him questions about what he witnessed.

‘I will tell you I know nothing,’ he concluded.

Thee Pharoah’s posts about Brown’s killing were first discovered by reporter Tim Dickinson and later picked up by the site Mashable.

As night descended on Ferguson Friday, hundreds of people came up to take part in a march led by Rev Jesse Jackson to the site of Brown’s killing.

Jackson bent over in front of a memorial cross and candle and sighed deeply. He urged people to ‘turn pain into power’ and to ‘fight back, but not self-destruct’ through violence.’

Many of the participants came out carrying signs and bullhorns to demand justice. Young men and women posed with their hands in the air, holding posters that read: ‘Don’t shoot.’

However, as night fell on the city the clashes grew more ominous. Several reports cited tear gas and smoke bombs being fired by officers as groups of youths refused to clear the streets.

Some reports were also made of looters raiding local shops around 3am ET.

Meanwhile, the Brown family spoke out today accusing police of ‘inciting violence all over again’ by releasing images of a convenience store robbery which they acknowledged ‘appeared to be’ Michael Brown.

After releasing the tape on Friday, police admitted that Officer Darren Wilson didn’t know Michael Brown was a suspect in a robbery when he stopped the teen and subsequently shot him dead in Ferguson last Saturday.

But speaking to CNN and NBC later in the day Friday, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson offered a different version of events, saying that officer Darren Wilson became suspicious of Brown after spotting a box of cigars in his hands that had been reported stolen.

Ferguson’s top cop explained that initially Wilson stopped Brown for walking in the middle of the street, but as he drove away, the officer ‘made the connection’ between the teen and the grocery store robbery, reported USA Today.

Attorney Anthony Gray, a lawyer for the family, said that the release of the CCTV tape was a ‘strategic side show’ aimed at ‘denigrating their son’.

Police chief Thomas Jackson held a second press conference on Friday and admitted that the officer who shot Michael Brown did not know he was the suspect in a robbery

Mr Gray said that the teenager’s parents, Lesley McSpadden and Michael Brown Sr, ‘never described him as the perfect kid’ and fully admitted that they had done their best to keep Michael on the right path for his future.

The lawyer added: ‘No one out there is proud of everything they have done when they were a teenager.’

Daryl Parks, another attorney for the Brown family, also told gathered media that it ‘appears to be Michael’ in the store CCTV.

Mr Gray described the release of the video – which the police chief said at a follow-up news conference on Friday was simply done because of ‘media requests’ – was a great distraction from the main issue.

‘That Michael had bullets pumped into his body while his hands were in the air,’ he added.

Michael Brown, who was unarmed, was shot up to eight times in the middle of the street in Ferguson, a St Louis suburb, around midday on Saturday.

POLICE OFFICER WHO SHOT MICHAEL BROWN WON DEPARTMENT AWARD

The officer who shot Michael Brown won a commendation for ‘extraordinary effort in the line of duty’ in February, it was revealed today.

Darren Wilson, 28, was nowhere to be seen at his white middle class home in the suburb of Crestwood where he moved just a year ago. It was claimed he’d left the single-story brick home ‘days ago’. No one answered the door when MailOnline knocked on the door and there were two or three police cars parked outside.

Neighbors told USA Today that he was ‘tall and slim’ and was often seen walking his dog.

Another neighbor, Ron Gorski, told USA Today: ‘He’s a young guy,’ Gorski said of Wilson. ‘Things happen and it’s a complicated situation. I feel for the family and the entire country.’

Wilson, who is on paid administrative leave, won a commendation for ‘extraordinary effort in the line of duty’ in February, according to NBC‘s Tom Winter.

He has spent four years in Ferguson and two previous years in the Jennings district, said Winter.

Ferguson police chief Thomas Jackson said the shooting had been ‘devastating, absolutely devastating’ to Wilson, adding: ‘We had no complaints about the officer. He was a gentleman. A quiet officer. He has been an effective officer.’

According to public records, his mother died in 2002. Wilson has a sister and a half-brother.

Family slam police ‘character assassination’ of Mike Brown

Mr Gray added: ‘The family feels at this time where there is calm is in the community, he [Jackson] is inciting the community all over again.

‘We were finally getting to a point where we were galvanizing questions and now we are focusing on the sideshow. Do not take the bait.’

On Friday morning, police had revealed the name of the officer who shot Brown, Darren Wilson.

Simultaneously, they handed out video stills and a police report referring to a ‘strong-armed’ robbery at a convenience store close to the shooting where Brown was the ‘primary suspect’.

At a secondary police conference on Friday, Chief Jackson said Officer Wilson was only in the area when the robbery took place because he was responding to a separate 911 call.

Wilson only stopped Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson on Saturday around noon because they were walking down the middle of the road and blocking traffic, the chief said.

When asked about the police’s timing of releasing the robbery video along with the name of Officer Wilson today, the police chief said he did so because ‘you asked for it’ – referring to Freedom of Information requests from the media regarding the shooting. He added that he had ‘sat on the video for as long as he could’.

Eric Davis spoke to the media, on behalf of his cousin, Michael’s mother, Lesley McSpadden. Mr Davis said the release of the store robbery video tape was ‘smoke and mirrors’.

He added: ‘Whatever took place in the grocery store does not reflect what happened on Canfield [the street where Brown was shot dead].’

He asked for support from the community but once again reiterated the family’s wish that there be no violence.

Brown’s grieving family reacted with fury after police announced the dead teen was the ‘primary suspect’ in a convenience store robbery.

Along with naming Officer Wilson, which came after mounting public pressure to identify the shooter, the Ferguson police chief took the opportunity to disperse video stills and an incident report from a ‘strong-armed’ robbery that took place moments before the shooting on Saturday.

The teenager’s family expressed their outrage at the police’s decision to ‘assassinate’ their son’s character and divert attention from the cop killing.

The statement read: ‘Michael Brown’s family is beyond outraged at the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate piecemeal information in a manner intended to assassinate the character of their son, following such a brutal assassination of his person in broad daylight.

‘There is nothing based on the facts that have been placed before us that can justify the execution style murder of their child by this police officer as he held his hands up, which is the universal sign of surrender.

‘The prolonged release of the officer’s name and then the subsequent alleged information regarding a robbery is the reason why the family and the local community have such distrust for the local law enforcement agencies.

‘It is no way transparent to release the still photographs alleged to be Michael Brown and refuse to release the photographs of the officer that executed him.

‘The police strategy of attempting to blame the victim will not divert our attention, from being focused on the autopsy, ballistics report and the trajectory of the bullets that caused Michael’s death and will demonstrate to the world this brutal execution of an unarmed teenager.’

Michael’s aunt Sheryl Davis told MailOnline: ‘It’s appalling. I think that the police will try anything to smear Michael.

‘Nothing surprises me with the way that this police force have treated this whole thing.’

She added that the family would be asking for the full surveillance footage to see if it was indeed the teenager in the clip.

The family had described their son, who had no prior criminal record, as a ‘gentle giant’ who was looking forward to starting college this week before his death.

There is nothing based on the facts that have been placed before us that can justify the execution style murder of their child by this police officer as he held his hands up, which is the universal sign of surrender.

Police also used today’s news conference to name Darren Wilson as the white police officer who fatally shot Brown.

In a shocking twist to the killing which sparked riots in St Louis, Missouri over the last few days, the officer investigating the convenience store robbery also attended the scene of the shooting and said the suspect and Brown were the same person.

According to the police report, video shows Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson having an altercation with store staff and allegedly stealing a box of Swisher Sweets cigars on Saturday, shortly before midday.

In the grainy images, a large black man wearing a light-colored shirt, distinctive shoes, a red baseball hat and khaki shorts is seen stealing cigars the cigars and then assaulting a clerk who intervenes.

A photograph of Michael Brown’s lifeless body, taken minutes later in the street, shows that he was wearing a light grey shirt, the same shoes and khaki cargo shorts. There was also a red baseball cap by the body.

The report, released by police on Friday, said the victim ‘had just come out of the restroom when Brown said he wanted several boxes of cigars.

As the attendant was ‘placing the boxes on the counter, Brown grabbed a box of Swisher Sweet cigars and handed them to Johnson who was standing behind Brown’.

Brown was told by the unidentified person that he had to pay for cigars, which cost $48.99.

The report then reads: ‘That is when Brown reached across the counter and grabbed numerous packs of Swisher Sweets and turned to leave the store.’

The attendant then called 911 as someone else came out from ‘behind the counter and attempts to stop Brown from leaving’.

A MATTER OF MINUTES: TIMELINE OF THE MICHAEL BROWN SHOOTING

11.48am – Officer Darren Wilson and an ambulance crew were at an unrelated call about a sick person

11.51am – A 911 call comes in about a ‘strong- armed’ robbery at a nearby convenience store

11.52am – Police radio dispatch gives a description of two robbery suspects who assaulted a clerk and stole Swisher Sweet cigars. The clerk says the suspects were walking toward the QuickTrip gas station

12.01pm – Officer Wilson encounters Michael Brown walking in the middle of the street in the 2900 block of Canfield Drive. The officer shoots Brown dead following an altercation

12.04pm – A second officer arrives on scene and the ambulance from the sick call arrives to give Brown medical attention. He is declared dead at the scene

12.05pm – A supervisor arrives at the scene of the shooting

Someone tried to stop Brown from leaving and locked the door until ‘Brown returned the merchandise to him’.

‘That is when Brown grabbed X by the shirt and forcefully pushed him back into the display rack.

‘X backed away and Brown and Johnson exited the store with the cigars’, said the report.

The robbery report described Brown as 6ft 4inches and weighing 292lbs.

The police report also gave a detailed description of the suspect’s clothing. It said the store robbery suspect was wearing tan khaki long shorts, a white T-shirt, yellow socks and flip-flop style shoes.

The officer writing the robbery report said he attended the scene of Brown’s shooting and that after reviewing the surveillance footage: ‘I was able to confirm that Brown is the primary suspect in this incident.

‘A second person, also at that scene, identified himself as being with Brown. That person was later identified as Dorian Johnson.

‘After observing Johnson and reviewing the video, I confirmed he is the second suspect in this incident.’

Dorian Johnson’s account of the shooting will now come under intense scrutiny with the revelation that he was identified as a robbery suspect too.

The 22-year-old, who was with Michael when he was shot dead, has said in numerous interviews that the incident began when the officer drove past and told them to ‘get the f*** on the sidewalk’ as they were on the road.

He mentioned nothing about the alleged convenience store robbery.

The information that was handed out by Ferguson police on Friday only held details about the alleged robbery and included no report from Officer Wilson about the shooting.

Despite the link to the robbery, there will still be an investigation into whether unnecessary force was used by Wilson in the killing of the 18-year-old, who was unarmed.

Officer Darren Wilson is a six-year veteran of the Ferguson Police Department and has no history of disciplinary action.

The cop, from the St Louis area, was treated for injuries after the shooting, according to police.

‘CHARACTER ASSASSINATION’: MICHAEL BROWN’S FAMILY AND PROTESTERS REACT

Reaction to Ferguson police’s announcement today that Michael Brown was primary suspect in a store robbery, has drawn outrage from his grieving family.

Brown’s family slammed the devious police for ‘assassinating Michael’s character’.

They told AP that the police were playing ‘the old game of smoke and mirrors’.

His aunt Sheryl Davis told MailOnline: ‘It’s appalling. I think that the police will try anything to smear Michael.’

Social media reacted to the information with a mixed response.

The Reverend Al Sharpton tweeted on Friday: ‘@smokey: “You can’t jump over a murder & talk to me about some cigars…” @thereval @newsone #Ferguson”’

The feelings of many were summed up by one user Jay @_TribeCalledJ, who tweeted:’Mike Brown being a robbery suspect doesn’t justify the 7 or 8 shots that were fired into his body.

Lisa Bloom, an NBC legal analyst and practising attorney, tweeted: ‘How today’s robbery report changes the #Ferguson cop’s defense: watch for him to argue he had right to shoot #MikeBrown as “fleeing felon.

Journalist Piers Morgan tweeted: ‘Alleged theft of cigars is not a reason to shoot dead an unarmed teenager. #MichaelBrown #Ferguson’

Chief Jackson said that the officer is ‘torn up’ over the shooting of Michael Brown.

Today, staff at the convenience store which Brown allegedly robbed have boarded it up because they fear rioters will kill them.

Two police cars were parked outside on Friday to watch the property, which is a short distance away from where Michael was shot dead.

Employees at the store appeared nervous and tense as they were asked about the incident. One staff member, a man in his 40s, told MailOnline: ‘He didn’t deserve to die. I feel bad about what happened.’

Another man in his 30s said: ‘People are going to come and kill us. We are worried. Are you going to protect us?’

The men also revealed that the clerk who was working that day is doing okay but scared as well.

In a brief press conference shortly before 9am (CT) on Friday, Chief Jackson gave a timeline of the minutes leading up to Officer Wilson’s shooting of Brown on August 9.

At 11.48am, Officer Wilson was attending an unrelated ‘sick call’ with an ambulance present.

At 11.51am, a 911 call came in reporting a ‘strong-armed’ robbery at a convenience store, which included a description of two suspects.

At 11.52am, dispatch gave a description of a robbery suspect over the radio.

A further description, with more details, was given over the radio and stated the suspect was walking towards another convenience store, QuickTrip.

At 12.01pm, Officer Wilson made contact with Michael Brown who was walking with a friend on Canfield Drive.

A second officer arrived on scene immediately after the shooting.

Police have said 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot dead after Officer Wilson encountered him and another man on the street.

Police claim one of the men pushed the officer into his squad car, then physically assaulted him in the vehicle and struggled with the officer over the officer’s weapon.

At least one shot was fired inside the car. The struggle then spilled onto the street, where Brown was shot multiple times.

Witnesses have said the officer fired on Brown as he tried to run away.

Ferguson police were heckled on Thursday night while patrolling an angry crowd protesting the death of black teenager Michael Brown.

Demonstrators had chanted: ‘What’s his name? What’s his name?’ at Officer Jon Belmar.

Ferguson police had refused to name the officer who shot dead the teenage student, citing death threats against officers on social media.

There had been growing anger in the Ferguson community as to why the officer’s name has not been released, almost a week after the fatal shooting.

Hacktivist collective Anonymous had released the alleged name of the officer – but authorities said that the person named was actually a dispatcher and was not involved in the Ferguson shooting or any other.

Cameroonian, King DF holds high hopes of becoming China’s first black rapper

Starting today, we are going to present you a series of reports featuring expatriates’ lives in China.

First, a Cameroonian student who arrived in Beijing three years ago with grand dreams of forging a career in music.

He goes by the name of King DF. CRI’s Daniel Holmes has the story.

“My name is King DF. I’ve been in China (for) 3 years. I’m a rapper and in brackets I’m an MC….and an MC means a master of ceremony.”

But on paper, King DF’s reason for coming to China, was to study business. But this wasn’t the reality.

“My dream was to become the only black rapper in China. That was the main point of what I tried to find. I love working in clubs because for me…..”
But behind this glitzy lifestyle, of champagne and club beats, he’s still at his humble beginnings.

Taking us to his student digs in the north of Beijing, he shares a small room with his friend. With a busy social life, it’s always a place buzzing with activity.

His promising career began when his single about the Beijing football team, Beijing Guo’an, did well. Being able to write songs in Chinese is a pretty handy talent.

But his ongoing rise to stardom hasn’t always been easy. When King DF first arrived, the culture change was a huge shock.

“When I came in China it was pretty hard. I’ve never gone through such hardness in my life. Being black and coming to China, the view you have for China is an easy life. I wasn’t used to the food. I found myself falling in to McDonald’s.”

Visiting the gym is now a regular part of King DF’s routine – trying to shed the pounds he put on whilst struggling to adapt to Chinese food.

“Now I’m an obese. I’m having excess weight on me because in that first year I spent almost 6 months feeding on McDonald’s.”

Pointing to his muscles, he tells us exactly what McDonald’s has done to him!

“This was the old shape. But you can see some McDonald’s squishes. I need my shape back!”

As he works hard on his music and body, we’ll soon find out if China’s ready for King DF.

For CRI, I’m Daniel Holmes.
